Takes me back to a simpler time

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Loved this book. I couldn’t put it down. The struggle of the dying old ways versus a fast, ever changing time in music and religion. This year in the life of a 12 yr old boy in the mountains of VA is a must read. It will make you laugh and possibly cry as it takes you back to a simpler time in the four seasons of a boy on his way to becoming a man.

Great Look at Southern Appalachian living!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I grew up in Philadelphia PA. Eddie grew up in Southwest Virginia. Same country, different worlds! What a wonderful look at life in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Eddie’s love for his kin folks, music, food, and flowers is so apparent. Even at 12 years old, he had a passion for preserving the old ways. Loved this book!

Eddie Bond’s memoir reads with such charm I almost felt I was reading a novel. The characters—Granny Widner, Uncle Leon, and other family members—leap off the page, full of quirks and idiosyncrasies that make them unforgettable. The stories are rich with sensory details, humor, and tension, offering a glimpse into a world that feels both distant and familiar. I loved the multi-layered narrative and emotional depth while diving into real-life Appalachian adventures.
